The longest night....

Tonight is the longest night (with tomorrow being the shortest day) and our lighthouse has broken. Probably one of the few occassions in it's 160 years of history that it isn't working. In fact it's only since there has no longer been a "lighthouse keeper" living on the island that it has failed!  Thankfully the natural world has taken matters in hand and provided a beautifully still night and a clear moon. In the photo above you can see the MV Graemsay on it's way to the Graemsay pier.

And below the lights of Stromness making this picture look like a Christmas card!

Sian, I cannot think of a more beautiful place to see in the solstice and the new year. Someday, someday...

It must be so strange not to see your lighthouse beacon. Good luck to the MV Graemsay!

Stay warm and enjoy your white holidays.

  3. Looks like you are having similar weather to us in Wales.
You asked on my blog what the tall tower in Swansea was.
Here's the answer I wrote on my blog: Sian, the big white tower in the city centre is the Meridian Tower. It was completed a year or two ago, and is mainly apartments, with some businesses on the ground floor, and a restaurant at the top (I think the restaurant may have closed). Can't decide whether the building is a 'landmark', or an eyesore!

  4. Happy Winter Solstice Sian, and I love the photo you took of the lighthouse at night. Very atmospheric

  5. Louise - I know it is a magical time of year I think. The scenery is so stunning at the moment (though I feel sorry for the farmers, their livestock, and all the people trying to travel!).

Beckenhamgirl - Happy Solstice to you too!

Jeremy - Ah thought I hadn't seen the tower in any recent photos. Hmmm... Does rather dominate the skyline rather! Is the Market still going in Swansea? I well remember getting lava bread from there.
