Remembering sunshine....

As I've mentioned countless times, the weather this summer is "changeable" to say the least. The weekend before I went off on my travels "south" the day started like the photo below with clouds hanging over the Hoy Hills, and ended up with the photo above - a stunning sunset.  I'll share a few more photos in this post taken that same beautiful evening.

Sandside Bay - our lovely sandy beach - the Hoy hills out of the cloud now!

This decaying boat is one of my favourite subjects

I love the "Cow" Parsley at this time of year

This is looking down our "main" road towards the beach

I love the reflection of the hills in the still water

There were no waves lapping the shore this evening. The sea hardly moved by the old Sandside pier...

The sun still had some way to go to set behind the West Orkney Mainland (and the old winch on the Sandside pier).

It was a magical and memorable evening.....

  1. Particularly love the Cow Parsley photo ... and that winding gear (I presume for boats?).

    1. Yes the winding gear (now not in use) was used to haul up boats. I love cow parsley - once it loses it loses it's flowers the flower heads become wonderfully skeletal.

  2. That boat of yours I remember very well: one of my own favourite photos from our holiday is of it! And I too adore the cow parsley at this time of year. Your photo of it with the hills reflected in the water behind is absolutely *beautiful*.

    1. That boat is a very good photographic subject! I love taking photos of it as it decays over the years. I love the reflections too - not often it is still enough to capture that.

    1. I love that old boat too. The water is still VERY cold - though the island children do play in the shallows on warm days. Tougher than me I think!

    1. Thanks Pat. Though it's hard to take a bad photo with the landscape here! My wee compact digital is looking rather battered these days as I *always* have it in my pocket, just in case...

  9. Desperately trying to catch up with my neglected favourite blogs, Sian. Super photos and 4 very interesting posts. Thanks for the reminder of sunshine and clear blue skies. I've almost forgotten what they look like. Sigh....
