Comet Pan-STARRS

The above photo of the comet, PANSTARRS was taken by Andrew Holinrake (archaeologist and gives great tours round Ness Batter) from the West Mainland of Orkney. The Orkney sky is amazing at night. Layer upon layer of stars. Absolutely stunning.  Unfortunately I don't have a decent pair of binoculars so however hard I scanned the sky I couldn't see this. So thanks to Andrew for the photo!

And this photo, taken in Shetland, is stunning too.....showing the comet with the Andromeda galazy...

  1. Great photo. I went out and looked for it when it was supposed to be at it's most visible, and didn't see it; hope the one later in the year is more exciting!

    1. I need to get some decent binoculars! Apparently I would have been able to see it with those...

  2. I never thought but of course you must have amazing night skies. Aren't you teeny bit tempted to get a telescope ? or decent binoculars ? I envy you your clear night skies. We have a park in Nova Scotia that has been declared a "dark sky preserve". I imagine your skies are even better though.

    1. Yes must get decent binoculars. Must save up for them..... Sadly even on GRaemsay we have quite a bit of light pollution from Stromness over the water. However it's 100 times better than when I lived just outside London - obviously!! Some parts of Scotland are trying to get "dark sky status"....
