Another sunny autumn day to treasure....

Button is ensuring I make the most of the bright sunny days of Autumn. She insisted I went for a walk with her - no really she DOES insist.  She keeps coming in and out the door, meowing and won't settle till I get my boots and coat on and set off into the garden or down to the shore.  Maybe she should have been a d.o.g. (don't tell her I said that...).  Though once we are out she is quite patient while I potter around taking pictures and enjoying the views.

I love the water ripples made by the water running off the land....

This sand was undercut by water, but I love the pattern here... It looks like a "Button"! She was inspecting it too - hence the paw prints....

I just love the sandy beach at Sandside....

As, indeed, does Button.... lots to watch....

And soft under the paws...

We decided to go for a walk to the shell beach too.... I had to scramble up the sand dunes first..... meanwhile Button leapt up them in two agile bounds - kicking sand in my face as she went! And then to add insult to injury stood at the top bemoaning my slowness as I gasped for breath after hauling myself up (the dunes aren't that high, I'm just not fit!).

And onto the shell beach, with the coral....

The Hoy Dragon is still sleeping....

And the sun still shines on Stromness....

Then back home for tea and toast and more work - for me at least!

  1. Lovely pictures of your shore. I also think Button is a very special kitty. How wonderful to roam the sand and shell beaches. It is just so beautiful.

    1. Button would agree with you ;-) As too do I. She is a really fun companion, and it's lovely to have her with me wandering along the shore. Though she sometimes abandons me if she gets the sniff of a mouse!

  2. hi there.
I'm an American Indian writer and journalist. I currently working on a book that is set in rural Scotland. After a lot of research, I found that Graemsay is where I'd like to set it in. It's set in the 1930s-1960s, so I'd love if you could help answer some questions about your the history of the island.
    Thanks a lot,

  4. Button amazes me. I too was thinking that that she was very d.o.g.-like in her behaviour. What a marvellous cat she is !

    1. I've heard of other cats going for walks with their people too. But it does surprise me just how much she loves the beach (worries me when the tides are high though!).

  5. Your photos are wonderful, Sian. That new camera is doing you proud. :-) I wish you could send us a bit of your sun and blue sky. We had a little on Thursdayas a tiny chnage from the perpetual grey and wet. Sigh....

    1. I know!! It is extraordinary.... clearly we were "meant" for each other!! I spoke to one of the cat protection people who knew her and she'd had quite a chequered life before. Don't think she suited a family or living in a town. And yes come back!!!!

  7. Oh this brings back memories! We used to have a cat who came for walks with us and the family Springer Spaniel. We used to go pretty far up the hill above the village, out onto the moor. A long way for a cat's little legs! Your beach cat is adorable.

    1. I do get a bit worried about taking her too far and I try and avoid the road (though she probably wanders down it on her own!). But around the shore I know if she takes fright she will just run up into my field behind the house and be quite safe.

  8. I have just spent three days reading your entries in the order you posted them and I have to confess that I'm hooked on your accounts of life on Graemsay. Until I found your blog entirely by accident, I didn't even know your island existed. Thank you so much! I've blogrolled you and have even written an entry about you on my personal blog.
