Any old iron?
.. to quote an old music hall song! The local scrap metal dealer has been over to Graemsay and the farmers have been gathering old scrap metal to be shipped off the island. Usually individuals arrange for some scrap to be shipped over whenever necessary - with prices for metal being good at the moment due to markets in China, then you just about break even with costs. However it can be a bit of a performance to get it all arranged, so folk were quite happy when the local scrap dealer arranged to come over and deal direct with folk.
All this stuff will be winched onto our ferry and then taken into Stromness where it will be taken by lorry to the scrap yard in Kirkwall. I think there are a good few years worth of "scrap" on the island that has now been cleared!
I thought the second shot was a car accident ...
ReplyDeleteI have a dim memory of the line in a song by Stanley Holloway (?) ... "any old iron " ... does that ring any bells with you ?
LOL - yes it does look bit dramatic doesn't it! But no, it all just rusted away. and yes you're right!! It's the STanley Holloway song I was referencing in the title!! A good old musical hall number that one!
DeleteGosh, I bet the place looks really tidy now, Sian. :-) If prices are good I'd better get DH to clear out some of his "stuff" from our barn.....
ReplyDeleteI haven't really noticed a difference to be honest! I think a lot of the scrap was out of view in farmyards and old byres. But yes prices are good as China is absorbing more than can be supplied by the West. so yes get DH to clear out the barn!!
