The Milky Way over Graemsay....(and Hoy)....

No not a giant chocolate bar!  The astronomical version.   Maciej Winiarczyk who lives in Caithness does the most fantastic photography of the Northern Lights (aurora), and night sky.  He was in Orkney recently for the Science Festival and took these photos from just outside Stromness.

The very bright light on the left of the photo might be Hoy Low lighthouse, judging by the map he provided for the direction of the shot.  The hills are on the island of Hoy. Both photos were taken on long exposure within a few minutes of each other.

The yellow glow is the remains of the sunset.  I love watching the night sky, often sitting on a bench in the garden.  Though the many lights in Stromness now dull much of the Northern lights from Sandside :-(

You can follow Maciej Winiarczyk on Facebook (there should be a link if you click on his name).

  1. That is incredibly beautiful! I've not seen the Milky Way since I was a child (a long time ago). Too many lights at night here in Southern California.

    1. Even here the lights across Hoy Sound on the Orkney Mainland can blot out all but the brightest. I have to find the dark side of the house to really see the many layers!

  2. I too haven't seen the Milky Way for a long time and to see the Northern Lights would be more than a treat.

    1. I love both. I get a bit blase about the Northern Lights, and often they look amazing on camera and are hard to see with the naked eye. I keep a watch on a local aurora group and when they say there is good activity I put on my hat and coat and go out and watch!
