A trip to Hoy

And in a slightly brigher vein..... here is a YouTube video that I found on Facebook (Orkney Live) of A Trip To Hoy. It's about 9 minutes long, but gives you a flavour for the island that is next to Graemsay (Graemsay sits between Hoy and Stromness on the Orkney Mainland).  The narrator has an Orkney accent, a lovely soft accent, unlike the usual Scottish accent (as I've mentioned many times Orkney doesn't consider itself Scottish!) Enjoy!

  1. Thanks for this, Sian. Beautiful scenery and very interesting. Also very poignat at times, especially in the account of the Longhope lifeboat disaster, with two poor women each losing her husband and not just one but two sons. The bravery of lifeboat personnel defies description.

  3. The cliffs just go to show the effect of wind and tidal erosion! I love the Orcadian accent ... used to go to 'Orkney meetings' in NZ, and it was a real pleasure just listening to those gorgeous accents! So soft and musical with the addition of a real sense of humour.

  5. Perpetua - The memorial to the lifeboat crew always moves me to tears. The sculptor is local, from North Ronaldsay. It's a very moving image of a lifeboatman forever gazing out to sea. And yes it had a huge impact on two families in particular. I find it extraordinary that "volunteers" are prepared to go out in all weathers to save lives. Truly heroic.

Pat - glad you enjoyed it.

Shirlwin - Orcadians have spread far and wide :-) I love the accent, it's very similar in it's musical tones to the Welsh accent which is very familiar to me (my father was from te Wels valleys).

Yuliya - Glad you found it interesting. I love reading your blog too. It's fascinating hearing about lives in other parts of the world.

  6. Lovely video - seems like a great area. I agree that the narrator's accent is very pleasant. Interesting you say that it reminds you of a valleys Welsh accent - I find some of the accents down here some of the roughest I've heard, rivalling only some of those dreadful Northern English accents (say, Leeds) for harshness on the ear. Maybe it's because I have Scottish and Swedish ancestry that I so like the voice - a sort of genetic memory.

  7. A lovely, gentle film which gives a real flavour of Hoy. I loved the sound of the waves at Rackwick and those big, rounded boulders on the beach.
