We had some beautiful, warm, sunny weather earlier last week and I took a drive up to the old quarry. In Scotland we are allowed to drive 5 miles or so for exercise etc. Well as Graemsay is only about 1.5 x 2 miles it is easy to stay within the limit. Haha! So here are some photos from a lovey time spent listening to the curlews, skylarks, gulls, oystercatchers, bees, and watching the pond skaters zooming across the quarry water. I saw one damselfly but not long enough to identify. Above - Hoy High lighthouse, Sandside, and across the water Orphir on the Orkney Mainland.
Old crof houses, the farm of Fillets on the hill
The Hamnavoe ferry sailing out of Stromness on the way to the Scottish Mainland.
Heading out of Hoy Sound....
The croft of Dean
The old Manse....
Looking over towards Stromness.....
A coastguard helicopter.....
And some of the lovely wild flowers at the quarry.
Bird's foot trefoil
Ladie's smock
Dwarf willow setting seed.
A hairy silage bale!
Curious holes.... maybe mining bees or some other insect....
A beautiful day, you can almost feel the warmth from the pictures.
ReplyDeleteWe've had a couple of lovely warm, well almost positively hot, days in Orkney. I love this weather. Not too hot, but just pleasantly warm to be outdoors.
DeleteYour wild flowers are so colourful and such a variety. A nice lot of photos once more
ReplyDeleteThank you! There are lots about and my knowledge is woefully slim, but there are lots of Orkney nature groups on facebook I can get advice and ID from.
