The day of the winter solstice was actually quite grey and damp, unlike the previous day. But Button and I still went for a walk. And keeping it real here are some greyish photos of that day!
A silhouette of a seal on a rock....
Button wondering why we are out in the rain....
Because we are looking for groatie buckies! The tiny pink shell between the black stones in the picture.
And they are not always easy to find among all the shells on the coral beach! The white stuff is maerl - it's a type of algae growing on the sea bed just offshore Graemsay. It's pink underwater (that helps the photosynthesis like the green in leaves helps - er - leaves. When it dies it calcifies into the beautiful white pieces all over the shoreline at Sandside.
Old machinery among the buildings at Sandside.
A rain shower over Hoy
Button watching a neighbour walking on the sandy beach across the pier.....
The old buildings at Sandside.....
A panorama......
And then home, and in the evening the Solstice candles are lit
And the circle of friends guard the light until the sun returns..... (fortunately it was back in the morning!)
I'm glad you have your circle of friends to guard the light - we all need the sun to return! 2020 is looking pretty dark to me at the moment, so I hope they have a lot of influence!
ReplyDeleteYes 2020 is going to be a challenging year! Let's hug the light!
