Moody sky

A few photos from last week.  Above - sunrise above Windbreck hill on Graemsay - looking fairly apocalyptic there!  Sunrise at the moment is 8.51 and sunset at 15.18..... and we are not at the shortest day yet!

Sunset on a sail back from Stromness.  Looking west - nothing between us and Canada!

And you need to click on the photo to see that this is Hoy Low Lighthouse in the distance!

  1. It suddenly hit me ... what did folk do during the long winter nights before electricity etc? 'Tis no wonder story telling was so important. And now ... how would folks react if there was an electricity blackout for a week or more today?!

    1. Candles and oil lamps would have been used to light indoors. Farm work during the hours of daylight - feeding the beasts in the byres and sheep in field etc. Then in the evenings all huddled round the range or fire to keep warm and reading the bible at night, knitting, and yes telling stories! A week?! I start planning to evacuate the island if the electricity if off for more than 8 hours. Haha!!

    1. It looks wonderful I think.... really connects to the power of the sun and fire.

  3. I expect that traditionally this time of year was spent making and repairing items.

    1. Yup - and still in. After feeding the cattle in the byres (all in for the winter to protect the land), and sheep in the field, then work will be ongoing in sheds to repair machinery etc. And any other indoor jobs that need doing in byres or home.
